What Actually Happens During a Drop-In Visit (It's More Than Opening the Door)

At Stay With Lacy, I provide professional in-home care for pet families throughout Stafford County, Virginia, and I wrote this guide to help you make confident choices for your pet.

Most people think a drop-in visit is just opening the door, filling a bowl, and leaving. It's not. Not even close.

Here's what actually happens during a Stay With Lacy drop-in visit — and why every single step matters.

The Misconception

When people first hear "drop-in visit," they picture someone popping in for five minutes, tossing some food in a bowl, and heading out. That's not what this is.

A professional drop-in visit is a structured, attentive check-in that covers your pet's physical needs, emotional needs, and health status. It's not a favor. It's a service.

Step by Step: What Actually Happens

Home check first. Before I even focus on your pet, I do a quick scan. Doors locked? Everything look normal? No signs of anything unusual? Your home is part of what I'm responsible for, and I take that seriously.

Then it's all about your pet. Fresh food and water per your exact instructions — not approximately, not "close enough," but exactly as you specified. Potty break without being rushed. Your pet gets to sniff, explore, do their thing at their own pace.

Playtime and affection — not optional. Your pet isn't just getting fed and watered. They're getting attention. Belly rubs, fetch, laser pointer for the cats, whatever makes them happy. This isn't a bonus — it's part of the visit.

Medication administration if needed. If your pet is on medication, I handle it with the same care and precision you would. I log what was given, what time, and any notes about how your pet responded.

The Wellness Check Most Sitters Skip

Here's the part that separates a professional from someone who "also does pet sitting."

Every visit, I do a wellness check. Are they eating? Are they alert? Is anything different from last time? Is there a new limp? Are they drinking more or less than usual? Is a normally social cat suddenly hiding?

Decades of experience have taught me what "normal" looks like for animals — and more importantly, what "not normal" looks like. When I see something that concerns me, I don't wait. I contact you immediately.

Photo Updates After Every Visit

After every drop-in, you get a photo update through Time To Pet. Not a generic "everything's fine" text — a real photo of your happy pet, plus notes about how the visit went. What they ate, how they seemed, anything worth mentioning.

You should never have to wonder how your pet is doing. That's the whole point.

Who Drop-Ins Are For

Drop-in visits aren't just for when you're traveling. They're also perfect for:

  • Long work days when your pet needs a midday check-in
  • Day trips when you'll be gone longer than usual
  • Consistent weekly care while you're at the office
  • Pets who do well alone but need regular attention and potty breaks

Whether you need someone once a week or three times a day, drop-in visits can be scheduled to fit your pet's needs.

Book your Meet & Greet today and let's build a drop-in schedule that works for your pet.
