Red Flags and Green Flags: How to Choose a Pet Sitter You Can Actually Trust

At Stay With Lacy, I provide professional in-home care for pet families throughout Stafford County, Virginia, and I wrote this guide to help you make confident choices for your pet.

Choosing a pet sitter is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a pet owner. You're trusting someone with your animals, your home, and your peace of mind. Getting it wrong has real consequences.

Here's exactly what to look for — and what to run from.

Green Flags: What a Professional Pet Sitter Looks Like

They require a Meet & Greet. A professional pet sitter won't just show up and start caring for your pet. They want to meet your animal in their own home, learn their routine, understand their personality, and make sure it's a good fit. If a sitter is willing to take any booking without meeting your pet first, that's a problem.

They ask detailed questions. A good sitter wants to know everything: feeding schedule, medications, behavioral triggers, what your pet is afraid of, where the emergency vet is, who to call if they can't reach you. The more questions they ask, the more prepared they are.

They have clear policies. Cancellation policy, what happens in an emergency, how they handle bad weather, what their communication protocol is. Professional sitters have thought through these scenarios and have answers ready.

They're licensed, bonded, and insured. This isn't just a checkbox. It means your pet and your home are protected if something goes wrong. Ask for proof. A professional will have it.

They communicate proactively. You shouldn't have to chase your sitter for updates. A professional sends daily photos and notes without being asked.

Red Flags: What to Run From

They'll take any pet, no questions asked. No intake form, no Meet & Greet, no questions about your pet's history or needs. This is a massive red flag. It means they're not thinking about your pet's safety or their own.

They can't tell you specifically what they'll do during a visit. "I'll take care of them" is not an answer. A professional can walk you through exactly what happens during a drop-in or overnight — what they check, what they do, how long they stay, what they document.

They seem more interested in your home than your pet. Pay attention to where their questions focus. A good sitter is asking about your animal. A concerning sitter is asking about your security system, your valuables, your schedule.

They have no reviews, references, or verifiable history. Anyone can say they love animals. Ask for references. Check reviews. Look for a track record.

They're not insured. If something happens to your pet or your home and your sitter isn't insured, you have no recourse. Don't skip this.

Why "Loving Animals" Isn't Enough

Loving animals is essential. But it's not sufficient.

Can your neighbor handle a pet seizure at 2 AM? Do they know what resource guarding looks like? Will they notice a subtle limp or a change in appetite? Will they know when something is wrong before it becomes an emergency?

Professional pet sitting means licensing, bonding, insurance, a detailed intake process, emergency protocols, and years of experience recognizing when something is off. The difference between a professional and someone who "also does pet sitting" is the difference between someone who has built their entire life around caring for animals and someone who is doing you a favor.

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured? Can I see proof?
  • Do you require a Meet & Greet before any service?
  • What does a typical visit or overnight stay look like, step by step?
  • How do you handle a pet emergency?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
  • How will you communicate with me while I'm away?
  • Do you have references I can contact?

Professional Commitment vs. Casual Gig

The pet sitting industry has been flooded with app-based platforms that make it easy for anyone to sign up and start taking bookings. Some of those sitters are wonderful. Many are not.

The difference between a professional commitment and a casual gig is accountability. A professional has built a business, has a reputation to protect, carries insurance, and treats every booking as a serious responsibility. A casual gig worker may cancel last minute, double-book, or simply not show up.

Your pets deserve better than "maybe."

Book your Meet & Greet with Stay With Lacy and see the difference a professional makes.
